What is SYNGASMART®

syngaSmart® is a range of containerized micro-CHP systems, engineered and developed by RESET, for Combined Heat and Power generation from woody biomass.
These solid and modular systems integrate every function: biomass loading and drying, gasification unit, syngas cleaning, biochar collection, genset, thermal recovery and automation/power panel.

Programmable and controllable either on site and on line through SCADA interface, they can be operated 24h in a carbon-negative, no waste cycle.
The biochar resulting after gasification can be used directly as fertilizer, in water treatment or as a Carbon Capture and Storage tool.
syngaSmart CHPs qualify for RHI, feed-in tariffs, Green Certificates and PPAs.

THE SUN: EARTH’S PRIMARY ENERGY SOURCE

Sun radiation activates the photosynthesis process by which trees and plants turn carbon dioxide and water into lignin molecules made of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H2), releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. This cycle supports the growth of biomass, a renewable source of clean, carbon neutral energy..

BIOMASS, A SOURCE OF BIOENERGY

Woody biomass include prunings, cuttings, brushwood, wastewood but also fruit shells (coconuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds…): this feedstock represent a valuable resource for sustainable bioenergy generation.

TURNING BIOMASS INTO ENERGY

SyngaSmart CHPs use the pyrogasification process to convert woodchips and woodwaste briquettes into a synthetic flammable gas called syngas, which is cleaned and burned in standard engines to produce electricity and heat, in a carbon-negative, no waste cycle.
The biochar (vegetable charcoal) resulting after wood gasification is a natural fertilizer and soil improver, increasing its characteristics of permeability, porosity, aeration and ability to retain humidity.

SYNGAS

Syngas is generated out of the building blocks that constitute lignin, an organic biopolymer contained in woody biomass: it is mostly made of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Unlike fossil fuels, wood syngas does not contain sulphur, metals or fossil carbon: using syngas does not increase the amount of atmospheric CO2.

BIOCHAR

Made mostly of carbon, biochar is the only byproduct of the gasification process. It is a powerful fertilizer when incorporated into the soil, resulting in agronomic benefits, such as increased crops production (thanks to increased organic substance in soil). Its application helps to improve the fertility of the soil and to increase water and essential nutrients retention for the plants, in particular calcium, potassium and phosphorus. Furthermore, biochar allows to trap carbon dioxide from atmosphere, resulting in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

ELECTRICITY

The generated electricity can be injected into the grid and sold, or self consumed for off grid applications, thus reducing fossil fuels consumption and allowing decentralized generation.

HEAT

Thermal power is available in form of hot water, steam or cold power (trigeneration). It can be used for drying purposes, domestic hot water production or in district heating.

SyngaSmart CHPs produce continuous programmable power, unlike other RES which rely on unpredictable factors, such as wind and sun availability.
Using locally available biomass, SyngaSmart helps reducing fossil fuels dependency.

PLUG AND PLAY

The containerized solution allows indoor or outdoor, hassle-free quick installation; the plant can be easily trasported and relocated wherever energy is needed. Besides, SyngaSmart footprint is much smaller in terms of space needed, if compared to other technologies with equivalent power, and it does not require a dedicated site for installation.

ECO-FRIENDLY CLEAN ENERGY

SyngaSmart technology allows carbon-negative energy production: in fact, it returns only a fraction of the CO2 absorbed by the biomass during its life cycle, storing the other part into the biochar. The released atmospheric, non-fossil carbon dioxide, feeds new growing biomass, resulting in a contribution to GHG mitigation and climate change contrast.

The biochar, composed of over 70% carbon, is a powerful natural fertilizer able to accelerate the growth of agri-food crops, plants and flowers, improving the characteristics of the land.
